Post 47: Il Ponte del Diavolo | The Devils Bridge

The History:

The Devils Bridge or The Bridge of Rocks, realized in 1378, was paid for by a tax on wine that would last for 10 years in the small town of Lanzo -  Torinese in Italy.  

The Legend:

It is said that it was the devil himself who built the bridge, after it collapsed twice during construction. For finishing the work the devil would take the soul of the first to cross, but instead of a man the people of Lanzo had a dog cross. Then, angry with the people for their trick, the devil stomped his feet forming the "Marmitte dei Giganti" (Pots of the Giants)

La Storia:

Il Ponte del Diavolo o Ponte del Ròch (pietra in piemontese) fu edificato nel 1378. Per far fronte alle spese, interamente sostenuta dalla Castellania di Lanzo, venne imposta una tassa sul vino per dieci anni.

La Leggenda:

Il nome del ponte deriva dalla leggenda secondo la quale fu il diavolo in persona a costruire il ponte dopo i crolli che si verificarono per ben due volte durante l’edificazione. In cambio il diavolo avrebbe preso con sé l'anima del primo a transitare sul ponte, e per questo venne fatto passare un cane. Il diavolo, adirandosi, avrebbe sbattuto violentemente le sue zampe sulle rocce circostanti formando le caratteristiche "Marmitte dei Giganti".
