Post 18: 6 Italian Cultural Faux Pas / 6 Gaffe Culturali Italiani

I recently found one of my more entertaining Italian language lesson papers on cultural faux pas. It’s a very interesting subject, sometimes we can offend someone without even knowing it! So I thought I would share some excerpts with you.
(Just for some background I came to Italy about 3 years ago knowing zero Italian. I had my fair share of cultural learning to do! haha)

Qualche giorno fa mi è capitato tra le mani una pagina che faceva parte di una delle lezioni di Lingua italiana piu’ divertenti che ho seguito. L’argomento era “Le gaffe culturali”: è molto interessante, puo’ capitare di offendere qualcuno senza nemmeno saperlo! Cosi’ ho pensato di condividerne una parte con voi.

(Io sono arrivata in Italia circa 3 anni fa senza sapere nulla della lingua italiana. Ho avuto un bel da fare per studiare lingua e cultura! haha)

1. “In Italy you should not use a toothpick in public...”

2. “In Italy it would be very rude if you took your shoes off in someone’s home. Where as in Japan,” (and Canada that I know of) “it would be very rude to leave your shoes on.”

3. “In the United States and Canada it is a faux pas to serve horse meat. In Italy you can eat horse meat,” without offending anyone. In fact I have been told it is better for children than regular meat. (I still won’t touch the stuff.)

1. “In Italia non devi usare lo stuzzicadenti in pubblico…”

2. “In Italia sarebbe molto maleducato togliersi le scarpe entrando in casa di qualcuno. Viceversa, in Giappone,”(e in Canada) “sarebbe molto maleducato tenere le scarpe.”

3. “Negli Stati Uniti sarebbe una gaffe tremenda presentare un piatto di carne di cavallo ai propri ospiti, mentre in Italia si usa.” E mi dicono che per i bambini è meglio della carne bovina.

 

4. “In the United States you wouldn’t eat a raw egg for hygienic reasons. In Italy Zabaglioni(s) base ingredient is raw egg and it’s considered a very nutrient and energetic dish.”

5. “In Italy it’s not advised that someone stay where there is a breeze,” For example if you open two windows on opposite sides of the house. “Where as in North America you can without a problem.”

6. “In Italy it is advised to wait 3 hours after eating to go swimming.” I am constantly told this by everyone here, but I still think 30 minutes is enough! Haha

4. “Negli Stati Uniti mangiare le uova crude è più che una gaffe: è una violazione delle norme igieniche di base, non si deve fare. In Italia gli zabaglioni a base di uova crude sono un antico piatto energetico e nutriente.”

5. “In Italia non è consigliato stare in mezzo alle correnti d’aria, invece nell’America del Nord si può tranquillamente.”

6. “In Italia tutte le mamme dicono di no ai figli che vorrebbero buttarsi in acqua dopo pranzo: gli italiani pensano che si debba aspettare almeno 3 ore.” L’hanno sempre detto anche a me, ma continuo a pensare che 30 minuti vadano bene! Haha
